| Katie
Raber and her husband John live on a farm in rural New York
near the Pennsylvania border. Katie has a small quilting business
that she runs from her home. She specializes in Double Wedding
Ring and Giant Dahlia quilts and John makes hand woven rugs.
Katie
and John are typically busy Amish – they manage the
quilt and rug business, keep a dairy herd, grow crops, all
the while keeping up with with 20 grandchildren who live nearby!
Katie is Old Order Amish and will only communicate by letter
– no phone shanties or FAX machines for her!
Katie
quilts all winter, then spends the summer helping with crops
and canning. Recently she sent me a photo of her kitchen with
its old-fashioned cook stove. I love to get new quilts from
Katie because they still smell of wood smoke from her kitchen
when they come out of the box. She signs her letters "Friend",
a compliment that I value greatly.
